A prebiotic is a substrate that is selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit. Not all fiber is prebiotic. Inulin-type fructans (ITF) and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) possess defined degree of polymerization (DP) profiles that dictate which microbial cohorts can cleave their bonds (Gibson et al., 2017, updated 2023).
